The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway of ligaments, bones and tendons in the wrist. When there is excessive pressure on the median nerve (which runs through this carpal tunnel space), it becomes inflamed or enlarged and presses against the walls of the carpal tunnel, causing severe pain.
